Abstract. Among the wild food, yams especially the species belonging to the genus Dioscorea (lesser yam) occupy a unique place in the food basket of indigenous tribal communities and serve as a ‘lifesaving’ plant group to marginal farmers and forest-dwelling communities, during periods of food scarcity. We describe here the knowledge and practices of Kattunaikka with reference to Author: V. Balakrishnan, Nadesapanicker Anil Kumar, M. K. Ratheesh Narayanan. Underutilized and underexploited horticultural crops form an integral part of health food green parks, neutraceutical industry, home decorations, renewable sources of green energy and above all food reserves during calamities. Leaf vegetables like agathi, chekkurmanis, waterleaf, drumstick leaf, basella and colacasia leaf are rich in. It is cultivated as a secondary crop with yam (Dioscorea spp) and other crops in many parts of Africa mainly by subsistence farmers despite its nutritional values [3, 4, 5]. The seed and tuber are the two major organs of immense economic importance as food for Africa with regional preferences [3,5,6,7,8]. The CGIAR decided to document their collections and their use by publishing a book "Biodiversity in trust: Conservation and use of plant genetic resources in CGIAR". It covers 22 crops, including such staples as rice, wheat, maize, and potatoes, to lesser known crops such as cassava, yams.
